Residents urged to safeguard against Identity theft
(Posted 10-16-04)

Ivy Hall has had some reported cases of identity theft lately, according to Mount Pleasant police.

Residents should take precautions to protect their personal information. Here are some steps:

  • Never put anything with your Social Security number on it into your personal mailbox. That kind of mail should go into official U.S. Mail drop boxes.
  • Consider mailing checks via U.S. Mail drop boxes instead of your personal mailbox. Thieves are known to take letters from personal boxes BEFORE the mailman arrives, using raised flags as invitations.
  • Put your garbage can out on Tuesday morning instead of Monday night. That way thieves have less time to rummage through your personal papers.
  • Keep your garage door shut when you're not in the garage or yard. Open garages are easy targets for thieves.
  • Keep an eye out for suspicious vehicles in the neighborhood. Usually, thieves drive slowly as they look for opportunities. If you get a license number, call the police.
  • Buy a paper shredder. They're cheap.
